July is UV Safety Month

Do you spend time outside during the summer?

Do you always wear sunblock?

How about a hat?

And sunglasses?

To make sure we all know how important those things are, July is UV Safety Month.

UV stands for Ultraviolet and it is a type of light that comes from the sun.
Sunlight is awesome and very important for us and our planet, but the UV light can hurt us if we are not careful.

There are five easy steps to protect yourself against UV light

 1. Spend some time in the shade. Go ahead and sit under that umbrella for a while at the beach!

2. Wear clothes that cover your skin. It's hot, but sometimes you need to wear that long sleeve T!
3. Wear a hat that covers your face and neck. Have you seen those super cute sun hats?!

4. Wear sunglasses. Again, the fashion possibilities with sunglasses are amazing!

5. Sunscreen! Make it at least SPF 30 and reapply every 2 hours.

You can learn more about UV, sun safety and play games at the SunWise webpage!

Clean Beaches Week

Will you be heading to a waterfront for July 4th fun?
While you are there make sure you are being safe and aware...celebrate Clean Beaches Week!

The Clean Beaches Coalition founded Clean Beaches Week in 2003 and says:
Clean Beaches Week is the “Earth Day” for beaches.
Held annually from July 1-7, it is a celebration of the healthy beach lifestyle.  The four main themes of the week are: food, recreation, travel and our environment.
What it's all About
We envision Clean Beaches Week as a seven-day celebration of consumers recognizing and embracing the benefits of beaches in their lives. We have developed four initial themes that highlight the importance of beaches to all Americans:

Environment: The 4th of July is the biggest beach holiday in America – and the MOST LITTERED.   During Clean Beaches Week, the public will be strongly urged to “leave no trace” of litter, only footprints at the beach.

Dining: The American Heart Association recommends that all Americans eat seafood at least twice a week.  During Clean Beaches Week, Americans will be encouraged to have a healthy meal everyday during their visit to the beach.

Recreation: More than 180 million Americans visit the beach each year.  During Clean Beaches Week, the public will be urged to get out and get active everyday by playing, surfing, fishing, walking or reading during their beach visit.

Travel:  Each year Americans make 2 billion visits to ocean, gulf, and inland beaches.  During Clean Beaches Week, the public will be encouraged to reduce their carbon footprint though energy efficiency, conservation, carpooling, walking and other green activities.

You can learn more about the coalition and Clean Beaches Week here.

Don't forget about Journey's while you are making the world a better place! See if you can connect your Clean Beaches Week stuff to the It's Your Planet - Love It journey!

Have a Happy 4th of July!

ALMOST SUMMER!

School's almost over!

What are you doing this summer?!

Get started by celebrating Memorial Day! It's not JUST a day for picnics and parties...it began as Decoration Day following the Civil War and was a day to lay flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. The day of remembrance was celebrated in many different ways for many years but in 1977 was named Memorial Day and given the last Monday in May as the official holiday.
If history is your thing, you can learn more about the history of Memorial Day here
If you are looking for a way to recognize fallen armed service people and help out survivors and families, check out this page with great ideas!

And this summer, don't forget about Girl Scouts and all the fun you can have!

National Women's Health Week

National Women's Health Week is an observance led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women's Health...whew, that's a mouthful. But, also an important issue to be an advocate!

May 10 - 16, 2015 is set aside for women to recognize, acknowledge, and commit to healthy living.

You can get on board with healthy living at any age...let's go ahead and get started now (or keep it up)!!

The tips offered on the website for National Women's Health Week are easy and perfect for all women and girls:
  •  Have regular checkups with a medical professional
  • Get active
  • Eat healthy
  • Get enough sleep and manage stress
  • Avoid unhealthy behaviors like smoking, texting while driving and not wearing a seatbelt or bike helmet.
Pledge to be healthy and encourage all the girls and women you know to do the same!

Now, connect healthy living and Girl Scouts...
All the Journeys have tips for healthy living, whether it be a recipe for a healthy snack or a Healthy Living Family Activity for Girl Scout Brownies and their families. Take a look through YOUR Journey Book and see what you can find.
Plus Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies and Juniors can do the Healthy Habits Journey Booklet !

What about Badges?
How about the Healthy Living Badge...

Or get active with the Athlete Badge...

Or eat healthy with the Cook Badge...

How do you stay healthy?
Tell us in the comments below and help inspire other girls!!
