Happy (belated) Labor Day!

Yesterday was Labor Day, hope everyone had a great holiday!

It's our last summer-ish holiday to enjoy our friends, family and a cookout before fall arrives.

What's your favorite cookout food?
Hamburger, cheeseburger, hotdog, BBQ, potato salad, macaroni salad, mac n cheese, potato chips, corn, watermelon, ice cream...

How about the chef? Who does the cooking and grilling? Are YOU a budding chef? Share your favorite cookout recipe in the comments below!
See what you know and learn something new with the Cook badge!

But...do you know why we have the holiday? Click here for some background info on the holiday if you are interested.
In a nutshell, according to the U.S. Department of Labor: "Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."
So, next year while you are enjoying that hot dog and chatting with your friends, remember the tenacity of the people who got us here! Think about how you could use them as inspiration for change you want to make!

United We Stand...and dress

Wikipedia defines a uniform as "a type of clothing worn by members of an organization while participating in that organization's activity." Pretty simple, huh?
Now, think of all the different types of uniforms there are and the people who wear them...
  • sports teams/athletes
  • students
  • pilots
  • flight attendants
  • members of the  military
  • doctors
  • nurses
  • police officers
  • fire fighters
  • public service workers
  • postal carriers
  • lifeguards
The list could continue on and on, but one that certainly needs to be included is Girl Scouts!
When we put on our Girl Scout uniform, it shows that we belong and what we are wearing unites us as Girl Scout sisters. But, don't feel too pinned down like you can't express yourself while in uniform! You can still wear your favorite jewelry and shoes, do your hair however you like, wear makeup and, of course, dress up that uniform with a smile.
It is our uniform that says "I am a Girl Scout." With that simple statement we are recognized as the amazing girls and women we are, earning respect and admiration.

The official uniform is a vest or sash and your membership pins and you can find all the info you need about that here and purchase them here.

The great thing about Girl Scout uniforms is how they have changed over time according to current styles and the availability of fabrics. Fashion was certainly different in 1912 than is now! Check out drawings of uniforms through the years of Girl Scouts.

Which one is your favorite?
How about this one for Girl Scout Brownies from 1973? Imagine it in brown with bright tangerine accents!

As you get back into school and your other activities starting up this fall, remember the importance of all your uniforms, official and not so official!

Your Global Connection

Did you know that by being a member of Girl Scouts you are automatically a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS)? GSUSA is a member organization of WAGGGS, which means you are a member too!
So, what does this mean? It means that not only have you gained 3.2 million sister Girl Scouts, but a total of 10 million girls and adults in 145 countries! Talk about a big family!!
Girl Guides was established in 1910 in England and was part of the inspiration for our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, to establish Girl Scouts here in America.
Check out more about WAGGGS here.

There is also Global Girl Scouting, which is dedicated to ensuring the Girl Scout Movement provides opportunities for girls to understand your relationship to the larger world - even if you don't travel outside your local community - so you can become a responsible global citizen. Find out more about what that means here.

Don't forget about our USA Girl Scouts Overseas (USAGSO) for that global connection too! USAGSO serves thousands of American girls living overseas and girls attending American or international schools. USAGSO offers the same excitement, fun, and adventures in Girl Scouting as those available to their stateside Girl Scout sisters. They help families and girls who have relocated to another country transition to the new culture and land with the familiar Girl Scout family.

Enjoy Girl Scouts here and around the world!
